What is a bastide?
In South-West France, a bastide is a planned medieval town, often organised around a central market square and a regular street layout. Monflanquin, Villeréal and Tournon-d’Agenais belong to this tradition. Penne-d’Agenais is another rewarding hilltop village to include in your trip, with its own layout and history.

Monflanquin: start at the square
Begin around the central square, then explore the surrounding streets and arcades. Rather than planning a long list of sights, take time to look at the old façades and the views that open between the buildings. For a day together, combine your walk with lunch or a café stop. With children, looking for unusual doors and architectural details can make the walk more engaging.
Villeréal and Tournon-d’Agenais
Villeréal’s timber market hall gives the village a distinctive centre. It makes a good focus for a visit, especially if your stay coincides with a market. Tournon-d’Agenais offers a different setting, with old streets and views from its elevated position. Choose according to your route and the time available, rather than trying to fit every village into one day.
Penne-d’Agenais: a hilltop walk
Allow time for the slopes when exploring Penne-d’Agenais. Its streets and viewpoints suit a leisurely outing with pauses along the way. Comfortable shoes will make the walk easier; if steps or steep streets are a concern, ask the tourist office about the most suitable route before setting out.
Plan a day that leaves room to enjoy it
Check market dates and current visiting information with the Fumel–Lot Valley Tourist Office. Opening hours and events vary with the season. For a weekend, one village and a relaxed meal can be enough; during a longer stay, spread your outings over several days.
